Descaling
Descale your Sage Oracle
The Oracle BES980 uses a dedicated descale mode for its dual-boiler system. The procedure requires manually draining both boilers, so the machine must be switched off and allowed to cool for at least 4 hours before you begin.
Important: only descale through the machine’s dESC menu and follow the boiler-drain sequence carefully.
Before you begin
You will need
- Ventori Descaling Tablets
- 1 litre of warm water for the descaling solution
- Fresh water for flushing
- Flat-head screwdriver
- Cloth and empty drip tray

Cool the machine and enter the advanced menu
Empty and reinstall the drip tray. Switch the machine off and allow it to cool for at least 4 hours. With the machine off, hold 1 CUP and POWER together for 3 seconds until rSEt appears.

Select dESC
Rotate the SELECT dial until dESC appears on the LCD, then press the dial to confirm descale mode.

Drain the right and left boilers
Remove the grey DESCALE ACCESS cover and place a cloth over the drip tray. Slowly open the right valve with a flat-head screwdriver. When drained, close it without overtightening. Repeat on the left valve.

Empty the drip tray and water tank
Carefully empty the drip tray, then remove and empty the water tank.

Remove the water filter
Remove the fitted water filter before adding descaling solution.

Prepare the descaling solution
Prepare 1 litre of warm descaling solution according to your descaler instructions.

Fill and reinstall the water tank
Pour the prepared descaling solution into the tank and lock the tank back into position.

Begin the 20-minute descale stage
Press 1 CUP. The LCD starts a 20-minute countdown while the boilers fill with descaling solution and heat. Allow the timer to reach zero for the full soak.

Drain both boilers again
Place the cloth over the drip tray and repeat the boiler-draining procedure on the right and left valves. Empty and reinstall the drip tray.

Refill with fresh water and flush
Rinse the tank, fill it to MAX with fresh water and reinstall it. Press 1 CUP to start the 20-minute fresh-water boiler flush.

Repeat the fresh-water flush
Drain both boilers again, rinse and refill the tank with fresh water, then repeat the boiler flush to remove residual descaling solution.

Exit descale mode and return to use
Press POWER to exit descale mode. Reinstall the correct water filter for your Oracle batch and return the machine to normal use.

Oracle water filter
Later Oracle SES980 machines — batch 1750 and above — use the Sage ClaroSwiss filter. Earlier machines use the older charcoal-style filter, so check the machine batch code or existing filter holder before ordering.
Replacement: approximately every 3 months or 40 litres; Sage notes up to 60 litres in softer level-2 water.

Cleaning cycle
Run the Oracle cleaning cycle
The Oracle displays CLEAN ME after approximately 200 extractions. The programmed cleaning cycle backflushes the group head and shower screen to remove coffee oils and residue.
Before you begin
You will need
- Filter basket and supplied grey cleaning disc
- Ventori Backflush Tablet
- 58 mm portafilter
- Cold water and an empty drip tray

Fit the cleaning disc
Insert the supplied grey silicone cleaning disc into the filter basket.

Add one cleaning tablet
Place one espresso-machine cleaning tablet on the cleaning disc.

Lock in the portafilter
Lock the portafilter into the group head. Fill the water tank with cold water and make sure the drip tray is empty.

Select CLEAN CYCLE
Press MENU and rotate the SELECT dial until CLEAN CYCLE and PUSH appear on the LCD. Press the SELECT dial to start.

Let the 370-second cycle finish
The LCD counts down the remaining cleaning time from 370 seconds. Allow the programmed cycle to complete.

Check and rinse
Remove the portafilter and check that the tablet has fully dissolved. If not, repeat the cycle without adding another tablet. Rinse the basket and portafilter thoroughly, then pull an espresso to purge any remaining cleaner.
Ventori tip
Don’t confuse descaling with the cleaning cycle. Descaling removes mineral scale from the boilers; the cleaning cycle removes coffee oils from the brew path. Sage also recommends a clear-water backflush after each coffee-making session.
After every use
Clean the steam wand
Wipe and purge the Oracle steam wand immediately after texturing milk. If the steam-tip holes become blocked, use the cleaning-tool pin; persistent blockages may require removing and soaking the steam tip.

Wipe immediately after texturing milk
Wipe the steam wand with a clean damp cloth immediately after every milk drink.

Purge the steam wand
Purge the wand immediately after texturing to clear milk from inside the steam tip.

Clear blocked holes
If a steam-tip hole becomes blocked, make sure the steam lever is closed and use the pin on the supplied cleaning tool.

Remove and soak the tip if needed
If the blockage remains, remove the steam tip, soak it in hot cleaning solution, rinse thoroughly and refit it securely.

Purge before the next use
Once refitted, purge the wand before texturing milk again.

Grinder care
Clean the Oracle grinder
The Oracle uses an integrated conical-burr grinder and automatic grind, dose and tamp system. Dry cleaning the burrs, grind outlet and tamping fan helps maintain consistent dosing and grind performance.
Recommended: light cleaning regularly and a deeper burr/outlet clean when residue begins to build up.

Unlock the hopper and remove the beans
Unlock the hopper, remove the remaining beans, then replace and lock the hopper temporarily.

Run the grinder empty
Run the grinder until no more coffee comes from the grind outlet, then unlock and remove the hopper again.

Remove the upper burr
Unlock and lift out the upper burr using its wire handle.

Brush the upper and lower burrs
Use the supplied burr brush to remove dry coffee residue from both burrs. Do not use water inside the grinder.

Clean the tamping fan and grind outlet
Use the tamp-removal magnet to remove the tamping fan, then clean the grind outlet with the grind-outlet brush.

Reassemble and test
Replace the tamping fan, push and lock the upper burr into position, reinstall the hopper and confirm normal grinding with fresh beans.

A soft brush is all you need for routine grinder cleaning. Avoid using water inside the grinder.

There is no single fixed interval because scale formation depends on water hardness and filter use. Sage specifically recommends descaling if scale build-up is visible in the water tank, and only through the machine’s dESC menu.
