Descaling you Sage Oracle Jet

Why Descaling Matters

Limescale naturally builds up inside coffee machines as water is heated. Over time this can reduce brewing performance, affect temperature stability and impact flavour.
Descaling removes mineral deposits from internal components and helps keep your machine operating efficiently.

Common Signs Your Machine Needs Descaling

  • Slower coffee flow
  • Longer heat-up times
  • Reduced steam pressure
  • Increased pump noise
  • Inconsistent shot volume
  • Bitter or dull-tasting coffee

How Often Should You Descale?

Soft Water: Every 3-4 months
Moderate Water: Every 2-3 months
Hard Water: Every 1-2 months
Water hardness has a significant impact on maintenance requirements. Hard water areas may require more frequent descaling and filter replacement.

How to Descale Your Sage Oracle Jet

The Sage Oracle Jet includes a dedicated descaling programme designed to remove limescale from the thermocoil, brewing system and internal water pathways.

Before starting:

  • Empty the drip tray.
  • Remove any water filter from the tank.
  • Ensure the machine is cool.
  • Have a suitable container ready to collect water.

Step 1: Prepare the Machine for Descaling

Tap the cog icon in the upper right corner of the screen.

Scroll down to the maintenance section and select "Descale".

Step 2: Add Descaling Tablets

Empty the water tank and add the descaling tablets to the water tank, filing it up to the maximum descale line.

Reinsert the water tank and empty drip tray back into the machine.

Step 3:Begin Descale

The Oracle Jet's touchscreen will provide step by step instructions. Follow these to activate the descaling cycle.

Step 4: Rinse and Flush

Once the descaling cycle is complete, empty and thoroughly rinse the water tank to remove any solution.

Refill the tank with fresh cold water.

Follow the on screen prompts to run a flushing cycle. Once the flushing is complete, replace the water filter in the tank and the machine is ready to brew again.

Ventori Tip

Don't wait for the descale reminder to appear.

Descaling based on your local water hardness helps maintain brewing temperature, flow rate and coffee flavour throughout the year. Waiting until scale has already accumulated can lead to reduced performance before the machine requests maintenance.

For best results, follow a regular descaling schedule rather than relying solely on machine reminders.

Water Filter Replacement

Sage ClaroSwiss Water Filter

The Sage Oracle Jet uses a ClaroSwiss-style water filter to help reduce scale build-up and improve water quality.
Regular filter replacement helps:
Reduce limescale formation
Improve coffee flavour
Extend descaling intervals
Protect internal components

When Should You Replace the Filter?

Sage recommends replacing the filter approximately every 3 months.
Heavy coffee drinkers or hard water areas may require more frequent replacement.

Filter Replacement Schedule

Normal Use: Every 3 months
Heavy Use: Every 2–3 months
Hard Water Areas: Every 2 months

How to Replace the Water Filter

Step 1: Remove the Water Tank

Lift the water tank from the rear of the machine and remove the existing filter holder.

Step 2: Remove the Old Filter

Twist or pull the old filter from the holder and discard it.

Step 3: Soak the New Filter

Place the new filter in cold water for around 5 minutes to remove trapped air.

While soaking:

Gently squeeze the filter underwater.

Ensure no air bubbles remain.

Step 4: Set the Replacement Date

The Sage filter holder includes a date dial.

Rotate the dial so it indicates the month you will need to replace the filter again (typically 3 months ahead).

Step 5: Install the New Filter

Insert the filter firmly into the holder.

Push until fully seated.

Step 6: Refit to the Water Tank

Install the filter holder back into the water tank and press down firmly so it locks into position.

Step 7: Fill and Flush

Fill the tank with fresh water.

Run a few cups of water through the machine before making coffee to flush any loose carbon particles.

Ventori Tip

Replace your water filter on schedule, not when coffee quality starts to decline.

A fresh filter helps reduce limescale and maintain water quality, both of which contribute to better tasting coffee. Many owners notice flavour changes long before a filter is visibly exhausted

When the CLEAN ME Light appears

What does the CLEAN ME Light mean?

The CLEAN ME light on the Sage Oracle Jet indicates that the machine's brewing system requires a cleaning cycle. This is also known as Backflushing.

This reminder is based on usage and is designed to remove coffee oils and residue that accumulate inside the group head and brewing components.

The CLEAN ME light is not a descaling reminder. It is a Backflushing reminder

How to Clear the CLEAN ME Light / Backflush the system.

1. Insert the cleaning disc into the single basket.

2. Place a cleaning tablet on the cleaning disc

3. Lock the portafilter onto the group head.

4. Press MENU button until CLEAN CYCLE icon flashes and PUSH is displayed on the LCD screen. To start the Clean Cycle press the illuminated MANUAL button.

5. The CLEAN CYCLE icon will flash and the machine will start to coundown from 370 seconds.

6. When the cycle is complete, remove and rinse the portafilter and basket.

The CLEAN ME light should switch off once the cleaning cycle has been completed successfully.

Ventori Tip

Don't wait for the CLEAN ME light to appear before cleaning.

Weekly backflushing / cleaning helps prevent coffee oil build-up, improves flavour consistency and keep extraction performance stable.
