Common Causes
The Machine Needs a Backflush Cycle
Most espresso machines illuminate the Clean Me light after a set number of brewing cycles.
Signs this is your problem
- Clean Me light is solid or flashing.
- Coffee quality has gradually reduced.
- Machine is otherwise operating normally.
How to fix it:
Insert the blind filter, add a cleaning tablet and run the manufacturer's cleaning cycle.
Use a Blind Filter Basket
Backflushing requires a blind (solid) filter basket to build pressure during the cleaning cycle.
Signs this is your problem:
- Cleaning cycle won't start
- Water flows straight through the portafilter
- Standard filter basket fitted
How to fix it:
Replace the normal filter basket with the supplied blind filter before starting the cleaning programme.
Add A Cleaning Tablet
Cleaning tablets dissolve coffee oils that build up inside the group head and solenoid valve.
Signs this is your problem:
- Cleaning cycle requested.
- Machine hasn't been cleaned recently.
- Coffee tastes increasingly bitter.
How to fix it:
Place one espresso cleaning tablet into the blind basket before starting the cycle.
Run the Cleaning Cycle
Allow the machine to complete the full cleaning programme.
Signs this is your problem:
- Cycle interrupted
- Machine switched off early
- Water tank emptied during cleaning
How to fix it:
Follow the manufacturer's cleaning instructions and allow the programme to finish completely.
Reset the Clean Me Light
On most machines the light switches off automatically after a successful cleaning cycle.
Signs this is your problem:
- Light remains on after cleaning.
- Cleaning programme wasn't completed.
- Incorrect procedure used.
How to fix it:
Repeat the full cleaning cycle following your machine manufacturer's instructions.
