Sage troubleshooting
CLEAN ME light on? Your Sage is asking for a cleaning cycle.
On compatible Sage espresso machines, the CLEAN ME indicator relates to the brew-head cleaning cycle used to remove coffee oils. It is separate from descaling, and the exact button sequence varies by model.
The cleaning cycle targets residue around the brew head and internal coffee path.
Descaling removes mineral scale from the water system and is a separate maintenance job.
Sage machines do not all start the cleaning cycle in the same way.
What to do now
Prepare the cleaning cycle correctly.
The hardware and start sequence vary by machine, but the core preparation is similar across compatible Sage models.
Confirm the machine is asking for a cleaning cycle
A CLEAN ME light or on-screen CLEAN ME message is a cleaning-cycle reminder on compatible Sage machines. Do not substitute a descale cycle.
Use the supplied cleaning disc
Fit the cleaning disc specified for your Sage model into the appropriate filter basket. Some models use a silicone cleaning disc rather than a separate solid blind basket.
Add one espresso cleaning tablet
Place one cleaning tablet with the cleaning disc as directed by your model's instructions, then lock the portafilter into the group head.
Fill the tank and empty the drip tray
Before starting the automatic cleaning cycle, make sure the water tank is sufficiently filled and the drip tray is empty and correctly fitted.
Start the cycle using your model's button sequence
The start procedure differs between the Barista Express, Dual Boiler, Oracle and other Sage models. Use the exact guide for your machine rather than a generic button combination.
Let the programme finish completely
Do not interrupt the cycle. When it is complete, remove the portafilter and confirm the cleaning tablet has dissolved, then rinse the basket and portafilter thoroughly.

CLEAN ME light questions
Does the CLEAN ME light mean I need to descale?
No. On compatible Sage machines, the CLEAN ME indicator relates to the coffee-oil cleaning cycle. Descaling is a separate process for mineral build-up in the water system.
Do I need a cleaning tablet?
For Sage cleaning cycles that specify a cleaning tablet, use one tablet with the supplied cleaning disc and follow the exact procedure for your model.
Do I need a blind filter basket?
Not necessarily. Many Sage machines use a supplied cleaning disc fitted into a filter basket. Use the accessory specified for your exact model rather than assuming a separate commercial-style blind basket is required.
Why is the CLEAN ME light still on after cleaning?
First confirm that the correct cleaning cycle ran to completion. If the reminder remains, check the model-specific manual or Sage guide before repeating the cycle.
How often should I run the detergent cleaning cycle?
Follow the machine's cleaning reminder and model-specific maintenance guidance rather than applying one fixed interval to every Sage machine.
Should I clear-water backflush between cleaning cycles?
Some Sage models recommend clear-water backflushing or group-head rinsing as part of routine care. Check your exact model guide because the recommended procedure varies.
Keep it on schedule
Clean when the machine asks — and keep the rest of maintenance organised.
Use the Sage Maintenance Hub for the exact procedure, or join the Ventori Care Schedule to keep cleaning, descaling and filter changes easier to remember.
