Espresso troubleshooting
Slow espresso can come from too much resistance in the coffee puck, a blocked basket or shower screen, coffee-oil build-up, or a restriction in the machine’s water system. The fastest way to narrow it down is to separate a coffee-puck problem from a machine-flow problem.
Slow only with coffee

Water itself is slow
If the machine’s normal water-only flow is also clearly weaker than usual, check the shower screen, cleaning status, water tank/filter and whether descaling is genuinely due.
Coffee-side causes
Shot time is useful evidence, but there is no single universal cutoff. Compare against your usual dose, yield and taste rather than treating one number as a fault code.
Cause 1
This is one of the most common reasons espresso drips instead of flowing. A very fine grind creates more resistance through the puck.
Cause 2
Too much coffee can leave insufficient headspace and create more resistance than the basket was designed for.
Cause 3
Coffee fines and residue can clog basket holes or, on some pressurised baskets, the outlet beneath the basket.
Cause 4
A level, repeatable tamp matters, but tamping force is usually a smaller lever than grind size and dose once the coffee bed is fully compressed.
Machine-side causes
At this point, changing the grinder will not solve the underlying restriction.
Coffee path
Visible residue or an overdue cleaning routine can restrict or disturb water distribution. Clean accessible parts and use the manufacturer’s cleaning cycle or backflush procedure only if the machine supports it.
Water system
If group flow, hot-water delivery or steam performance have all weakened — especially with a descale prompt or overdue maintenance — mineral scale or a water-filter issue becomes more likely.
Hardware
If cleaning, filter checks and any genuinely due descaling do not restore normal water flow, the restriction may be mechanical or pump-related and require model-specific diagnosis.
Only when the diagnosis fits
Backflush tablets target coffee oils in compatible espresso-machine cleaning procedures. Descaler targets mineral scale in the water system. Neither should be used just because a shot is slow.
Coffee-oil cleaning
Relevant when your compatible espresso machine is due for a detergent cleaning cycle or backflush and coffee-oil build-up is a plausible restriction.
Water-system maintenance
Relevant when water flow itself is reduced and scale is supported by other symptoms, hard water, a descale prompt or overdue maintenance.
Prevention
A repeatable dose makes slow-flow changes easier to interpret.
