Products you will need
Keep the essentials on hand so routine maintenance is quick when your machine needs it.
Descaling
Descale your Sage Barista Express Impress
Calcium and limescale naturally build up inside your machine over time. Regular descaling helps maintain brewing temperature, water flow and espresso flavour.
Recommended: every 2–3 months, or sooner in hard-water areas.
Before you begin
You will need
- Ventori Descaling Tablets
- Fresh water
- A large jug or container to collect water
Remove the water tank
Remove the water tank from the machine and empty any remaining water.
Remove the water filter
If fitted, remove the ClaroSwiss BES008 filter before descaling.
Prepare the descaling solution
Dissolve the recommended number of descaling tablets in warm water.
Fill the water tank
Fill the water tank with the prepared descaling solution.
Prepare the machine
Return the water tank to the machine and position a large container beneath the outlets.
Position a collection container
Place a container beneath the outlets that is large enough to collect the descaling solution.
Enter descaling mode
Press and hold the 2 CUP and POWER buttons simultaneously to enter descaling mode. The machine will illuminate the descale indicators.
Run the descaling process
Press the 2 CUP button to start the process. Allow the machine to run the descaling cycle.
Rinse with fresh water
Discard any remaining descaling solution, rinse the water tank thoroughly and refill it with fresh water before completing the rinse.
Reinstall the water filter
Refit or replace the water filter before returning the machine to normal use.
Ready to brew
Your Sage Barista Express Impress is now descaled and ready to brew. Regular descaling helps maintain brewing temperature, water flow and espresso flavour.
Water filtration
Sage ClaroSwiss BES008 water filter
The Sage Barista Express Impress uses the Sage ClaroSwiss BES008 water filter. Replacing it approximately every three months helps reduce limescale, improve water quality and maintain coffee flavour.
Remember: a water filter helps reduce scale build-up, but it does not replace regular descaling.
Quick information
- Filter type
- Sage ClaroSwiss BES008
- Replace
- Approximately every 3 months
- Priming
- Soak and flush before first use
- Descaling
- Still required according to water hardness
Cleaning cycle
Backflush the brew group
The Sage Barista Express Impress uses a three-way solenoid valve, so coffee oils can build up inside the brew group over time. Running the cleaning cycle with a backflush tablet helps maintain espresso flavour, extraction and machine performance.
Before you begin
You will need
- 1 CUP filter basket
- Cleaning disc / blind insert
- Ventori Backflush Tablet
- Portafilter
Fit the cleaning disc and tablet
Insert the 1 CUP filter basket into the portafilter, followed by the supplied cleaning disc and one backflush cleaning tablet.
Lock in the portafilter
Lock the portafilter into the group head and place a large container beneath the portafilter spouts.
Prepare the machine
Make sure the water tank is filled with fresh cold water and the drip tray is empty. Press the POWER button to switch the machine off.
Start the cleaning cycle
With the machine switched off, press and hold the 1 CUP, 2 CUP and POWER buttons together for 3 seconds. The cleaning cycle will start and run for approximately 5 minutes.
Let the cycle complete
During the cycle, water intermittently flushes into the portafilter to dissolve the cleaning tablet and backflush the group head. With the supplied cleaning disc, no water should normally come through the portafilter.
Check the tablet and rinse
Remove the portafilter and check that the tablet has completely dissolved. If it has not, repeat the cleaning cycle from the machine-off step. Once dissolved, remove the cleaning disc, reinsert the portafilter and press the 2 CUP button to rinse the brew head. Wipe away any splashes with a soft dry cloth.
Don’t confuse descaling with backflushing. Descaling removes mineral limescale from the water circuit; backflushing removes coffee oils from the brew group. Both matter for a well-maintained espresso machine.
After every use
Clean the steam wand
Milk residue can quickly build up inside and around the steam wand. Purging and wiping it after every use helps maintain steam performance, milk quality and hygiene.
Recommended: after every use.
Purge the steam wand
Purge the steam wand for 2–3 seconds before cleaning.
Wipe the steam wand
Wipe the steam wand immediately after use to remove milk residue.
Purge again
Purge the steam wand again to clear any milk from inside the tip.
Clean the steam tip
If the steam tip becomes blocked, remove and clean it before refitting.
Ready for the next use
Your steam wand is now clean and ready for the next use. Purge before and after steaming milk, and wipe the wand while it is still warm.
Purge the steam wand before and after steaming milk, then wipe it immediately with a clean damp cloth while it is still warm.
Grinder care
Clean the grinder
Regular grinder cleaning removes stale coffee oils and fine grounds that can affect flavour and grind consistency.
Recommended: every 2–4 weeks.
Empty the bean hopper
Remove the remaining beans and store them in a clean container.
Remove the upper burr
Unlock the hopper and lift out the upper burr using the wire handle.
Brush away coffee residue
Brush away coffee oils and grounds from the burr and grinder chamber. Do not use water.
Reassemble and brew
Refit the upper burr, lock it into place, replace the hopper and return the grinder to normal use.
A soft brush is all you need for routine grinder cleaning. Avoid using water inside the grinder.

Common questions
Sage Barista Express Impress FAQs
How often should I descale a Sage Barista Express Impress?
The ideal frequency depends on your water hardness:
- Soft water: every 3–4 months
- Moderate water: every 2–3 months
- Hard water: every 1–2 months
If you notice slower water flow, reduced steam performance or increased pump noise, descaling may be required sooner.
Should I remove the water filter before descaling?
Yes. It is best to remove the water filter before descaling. Descaling solution can reduce the effectiveness of the filter and shorten its lifespan. Reinstall it after the machine has been thoroughly rinsed with fresh water.
How many Ventori descaling tablets should I use?
Use two Ventori Descaling Tablets dissolved in warm water for one complete descaling cycle.
How often should I backflush my Sage Barista Express Impress?
Backflush approximately once a week, or after around 25 coffees, to remove coffee oils from the brew path and maintain espresso quality.
Can I use vinegar to descale my Sage Barista Express Impress?
Vinegar is not recommended. It can leave lingering odours, may not remove scale as effectively and can affect the taste of future coffees. Use a descaler designed for coffee machines instead.
Do I still need to descale if I use a water filter?
Yes. A water filter slows scale build-up but does not prevent it completely. Your machine will still require periodic descaling.
Why is the CLEAN ME reminder still showing after cleaning?
The CLEAN ME reminder relates to the backflush cleaning cycle, not descaling. Make sure the complete cleaning programme has been run with the cleaning disc and a backflush tablet.
How often should I replace the ClaroSwiss BES008 water filter?
Replace the ClaroSwiss BES008 approximately every three months, or sooner if you make a high volume of coffee or have particularly hard water.
Can poor maintenance affect espresso quality?
Yes. Scale, coffee oils and blocked shower screens can reduce water flow, affect brewing temperature and pressure, and contribute to bitter, sour or weak espresso. Regular maintenance helps keep extraction consistent.
What regular maintenance should I do?
- Backflush regularly
- Clean the shower screen and portafilter
- Clean the steam wand after every use
- Empty and clean the drip tray
- Replace the water filter approximately every three months
- Descale according to water hardness and machine use
