- Group Handle
Step 1: Fit the blind cleaning disc
Insert the 1CUP filter basket into the portafilter followed by the supplied cleaning disc.

Sage Barista Pro FAQs
How often should I descale a Sage Barista Pro?
The Sage Barista Pro should normally be descaled every 2 - 3 months, but this can reduce to monthly or fortnightly depending on local water hardness and how often you use the machine. If you live in a hard water area or make several coffee each day, you may need to descale monthly. Using a water filter can help reduce scale build-up, but regular descaling is still essential to maintain brewing temperature, water flow and coffee flavour.
How do I enter descaling mode on the Sage Barista Pro
To enter descaling mode, press the MENU button to enter the main menu. Use the GRIND AMOUNT dial to navigate the menu to DESCALE, then press to select. The 1 CUP button will illuminate.
Why is the Clean Me light on?
The Clean Me light indicates that the brew group requires cleaning. This is different from descaling. It means coffee oils have built up inside the group head and the machine needs a backflush cleaning cycle using a cleaning tablet and blind filter basket. Completing the cleaning cycle helps maintain extraction quality and prevents stale coffee oils affecting flavour.
How often should I backflush my Sage Barista Pro?
For home use, backflush the Barista Pro once a week using a cleaning tablet. If you make several coffees every day, you may wish to clean it more frequently. Regular backflushing removes coffee oils from the brew group and helps keep espresso tasting fresh.
Can I use descaling tablets instead of liquid descaler?
Yes. High quality descaling tablets are specifically designed to dissolve mineral scale and safely and effectively. They are easy to measure, simple to store and produce consistent results without the mess often associated with liquid descaler. Always use a descaler suitable for espresso machines.
How often should I replace the water filter?
Sage recommends replacing the water filter approximately every three month of after filtering around 40 litres of water, whichever comes first. Replacing the filter regularly helps reduce limescale build-up and improves water quality for better tasting coffee.
Can I still make coffee when the Clean Me light is on?
Yes, the machine will usually continue to make coffee. However, it is best to perform the cleaning cycle as soon as possible. Ignoring the reminder allows coffee oils to build up inside the brew group, which can affect flavour and long-term performance.
Why is my Sage Barista Pro pouring slowly.
A slow extraction can be caused by a grind that is too fine, overfilled coffee baskets, blocked shower screens, or scale restricting water flow. Cleaning the machine regularly and descaling when required will help maintain extraction.
Why does my espresso taste bitter or sour?
Bitterness is often caused by over-extraction, stale coffee oils or an overdue cleaning cycle. Sour coffee is usually the result of under-extraction, coarse grinding or insufficient brewing temperature. Regular maintenance, fresh beans and correct grind settings all contribute to better espresso.
How do I clean the steam wand?
Wipe the steam wand immediately after every use with a damp cloth and purge steam for a few seconds to remove any milk residue inside the tip. Remove and clean the steam tip periodically to prevent blockages and maintain strong steam performance.
How long does the Barista Pro descaling cycle take?
The complete descaling cycle typically takes 20 - 30 minutes, including the rinse cycle. Always allow the programme to finish fully before making coffee, as stopping the cycle early may leave descaling solution inside the machine.
What maintenance should I do on my Sage Barista Pro?
To keep your Barista Pro performing at its best:
- Daily: Purge the group head, wipe the steam wand and empty the drip tray.
- Weekly: Backflush the machine using a cleaning tablet.
- Every 2 - 3 months: Descale the machine and replace the water filter if required.
- As needed: Clean the grinder, bean hopper and shower screen to remove the coffee residue.
Following a regular maintenance routine will help improve coffee quality, extend the life of your machine and reduce the likelihood of unexpected faults.
