Sage ClaroSwiss water filter guide

Compatibility first

Which Sage machines use the ClaroSwiss filter?

Sage currently lists the ClaroSwiss filter for a wide range of espresso machines. The four models below are shown separately because older production runs can use a different filter system, so the batch number matters.

Older models where batch number matters

Barista Express

Current ClaroSwiss filter listed for SES875 / BES875 from batch 1735 and later.

Duo-Temp Pro

Current ClaroSwiss filter listed for BES810 from batch 1738 and later.

Dual Boiler

Current ClaroSwiss filter listed for BES920 from batch 1749 and later.

Oracle

Current ClaroSwiss filter listed for SES980 from batch 1750 and later.

These are not the only compatible Sage machines. They are the older models where Sage specifies a batch-code cut-off. Current ClaroSwiss compatibility also includes machines such as Barista Pro, Barista Express Impress, Barista Touch, Barista Touch Impress, Bambino, Bambino Plus, Oracle Touch, Oracle Jet and Oracle Dual Boiler. If your machine is older or differs from the examples below, compare the existing cartridge and holder before ordering.

Common Sage method

How to prepare and install a ClaroSwiss filter

The sequence below reflects the common method used in current Sage espresso-machine manuals. Always use your exact machine guide if its on-screen setup or filter holder differs.

Remove new Sage water filter from packaging

Step 1

Remove the new filter

Remove one new cartridge from its packaging. Keep any spare cartridge sealed until required.

Soak Sage water filter in cold water for five minutes

Step 2

Soak for 5 minutes

Place the cartridge in clean cold water for 5 minutes. Sage manuals use this soaking step before the cartridge is fitted into the holder.

Fit Sage filter into ClaroSwiss filter holder

Step 3

Prepare the holder

Rinse the reusable filter holder with cold water, then fit the new cartridge into the holder and make sure the parts are connected securely.

Install Sage filter holder into water tank

Step 4

Lock it into the tank

Align the holder with the adapter in the water tank and push down until it locks into place. Do not force an incompatible holder.

Fill Sage water tank with cold potable water

Step 5

Fill with cold potable water

Fill the tank with fresh cold potable water to the machine’s normal fill level.

Refit Sage espresso machine water tank

Step 6

Refit the tank

Return the tank to the machine and make sure it is fully seated. If your model asks you to confirm a new filter or set a reminder, complete that step on the machine.

No universal extra flush step: the standard Sage installation instructions above do not require the generic “run water through the machine to activate the filter” step that appeared on the old Ventori page. Use any additional priming or menu instruction only where your exact Sage model specifies it.

Replacement timing

Replace the ClaroSwiss filter every 90 days.

Sage’s current UK guidance says to replace the ClaroSwiss filter every 90 days for optimal results. Some individual manuals also advise more frequent replacement in hard-water conditions.

90-day baseline

Set the holder reminder or your Care Schedule when you fit the cartridge so the replacement date does not get forgotten.

Hard water

If your exact Sage manual recommends replacing the filter sooner in hard water, use that machine-specific guidance. Water hardness is also relevant to your descaling schedule.

Filter & descaling

A water filter reduces scale risk. It does not make descaling irrelevant.

Sage describes the ClaroSwiss filter as helping protect against scale build-up. Individual Sage manuals state that regular filter replacement can reduce the need to descale, but the exact descale procedure and timing still depend on the machine and water conditions.

Keep the filter current

Replace the filter at the specified interval so you are not relying on an exhausted cartridge.

Keep descaling in the care plan

Ventori’s Care Schedule uses water hardness to recommend descaling timing. If your Sage machine gives a descale prompt sooner, follow the machine prompt.

FAQs

Sage ClaroSwiss water-filter questions

How often should I replace a Sage ClaroSwiss water filter?

Sage’s current UK product guidance says every 90 days for optimal results. Some machine manuals advise replacing it more frequently in hard-water areas.

Do all Sage machines use exactly the same filter?

No. The current ClaroSwiss system is used across many Sage espresso machines, but older versions of some models can use a different filter. Sage specifically lists batch-code cut-offs for older Barista Express, Duo-Temp Pro, Dual Boiler and Oracle machines.

Does the Bambino Plus use a ClaroSwiss filter?

Sage’s current UK ClaroSwiss compatibility list includes the Bambino Plus (BES500/SES500). Check the filter holder and your exact machine documentation if your unit differs.

Why do I soak the filter for 5 minutes?

Sage’s installation instructions specify soaking the cartridge in cold water for 5 minutes before fitting it into the holder.

Do I need to flush the filter after fitting it?

Do not add a generic flushing step unless your exact model tells you to. The standard Sage installation sequence for the machines checked here is soak, prepare the holder, fit the cartridge, lock the assembly into the tank, fill the tank and refit it.

Do I still need to descale if I use a filter?

Yes, descaling remains part of machine care. A current filter can reduce scale build-up and may reduce how often descaling is needed, but follow your Sage model guidance and any earlier descale prompt.

Can I reuse an old water-filter cartridge?

No. Replace the cartridge when it reaches the end of its service interval rather than reusing it.

Is the black filter holder included with replacement cartridges?

The holder is a separate reusable part of the machine’s filter system. Replacement cartridges are fitted into that holder; check the product you are buying for its exact pack contents.
