Cleaning cycle

Backflush the brew group

The Sage Barista Touch uses a three-way solenoid valve, so coffee oils can build up inside the brew group over time. The machine provides an on-screen cleaning cycle that backflushes the group head. Running it with a cleaning tablet helps maintain espresso flavour, extraction and machine performance.

Preparing to backflush a Sage Barista Touch

Before you begin

You will need

  • 1 CUP filter basket
  • Cleaning disc / blind insert
  • Ventori Backflush Tablet
  • Portafilter
Fit the cleaning disc
01

Insert the 1 CUP filter basket into the portafilter followed by the supplied cleaning disc.

Add one backflush cleaning tablet to the portafilter basket.

Lock in the portafilter
03

Lock in the portafilter

Lock the portafilter into the group head and place a large container underneath.

Let the cycle complete
05

Let the cycle complete

Allow the cleaning programme to finish. Remove the portafilter and check that the cleaning tablet has completely dissolved.

Rinse the brew head
06

Rinse the brew head

Remove the cleaning disc and rinse the portafilter and brew head with fresh water. Wipe away any splashes with a soft dry cloth.

Ventori tip

Don’t confuse descaling with backflushing. Descaling removes mineral limescale from the water circuit; backflushing removes coffee oils from the brew group. Both matter for a well-maintained espresso machine.

After every use

Clean the steam wand

Milk residue can quickly build up inside and around the steam wand. Purging and wiping it after every use helps maintain steam performance, milk quality and hygiene.

Wipe the steam wand
02

Wipe the steam wand

Wipe the steam wand immediately with a clean damp cloth to remove milk residue.

Purge again

Ready for the next use
05

Ready for the next use

Your steam wand is now clean and ready for the next drink. Regular wiping and purging helps preserve steam performance and milk quality.

Ventori tip

Purge the steam wand before and after steaming milk, then wipe it immediately with a clean damp cloth while it is still warm.

Grinder care

Clean the grinder

Regular grinder cleaning removes stale coffee oils and fine grounds that can affect flavour and grind consistency.

Empty the bean hopper
01

Empty the bean hopper

Remove the remaining beans and store them in a clean container.

Remove the upper burr
02

Remove the upper burr

Unlock the hopper and lift out the upper burr using the wire handle.

Brush away coffee residue
03

Brush away coffee residue

Brush away coffee oils and grounds from the burr and grinder chamber. Do not use water inside the grinder.

Reassemble and brew
04

Reassemble and brew

Refit the upper burr, lock it into place, replace the hopper and return the grinder to normal use.

Ventori tip

A soft brush is all you need for routine grinder cleaning. Avoid using water inside the grinder.

Common questions

Sage Barista Touch FAQs

How often should I descale a Sage Barista Touch?

As a practical guide, descale every 2–3 months, adjusting the interval for your local water hardness and machine use. Hard-water areas or heavy daily use may require more frequent descaling.

How do I start the descaling programme on the Sage Barista Touch?

Open the machine’s Settings menu, select the Descale Cycle and follow the instructions on the touchscreen. Remove the water filter before adding descaling solution, then reinstall or replace it after the machine has been thoroughly rinsed.

How many Ventori descaling tablets should I use?

Use two Ventori Descaling Tablets dissolved in warm water for one complete descaling cycle.

How often should I run the cleaning cycle?

The Barista Touch will prompt you when its cleaning cycle is required. For a regularly used home machine, keeping to a weekly or usage-based backflush routine also helps prevent coffee-oil build-up.

Can I use vinegar to descale my Sage Barista Touch?

Vinegar is not recommended. It can leave lingering odours and flavours and may not remove scale as effectively as a descaler intended for coffee machines.

Do I still need to descale if I use a water filter?

Yes. A water filter reduces scale build-up but does not eliminate it completely. Descale when required by the machine and according to your water hardness.

How do I start the cleaning cycle on the Sage Barista Touch?

When the machine prompts for a cleaning cycle, follow the touchscreen instructions. The cleaning cycle backflushes the group head and is separate from descaling.

How often should I replace the ClaroSwiss BES008 water filter?

Replace the filter approximately every three months, or after the amount of water specified for the filter and your water-hardness setting. Replace it sooner if necessary with heavy use.

Can poor maintenance affect espresso quality?

Yes. Scale, coffee oils and blocked shower screens can restrict water flow, affect brewing temperature and contribute to inconsistent or unpleasant-tasting espresso.

What regular maintenance should I do?
  • Flush the group head and clean the basket regularly
  • Wipe and purge the steam wand after every use
  • Run the touchscreen cleaning cycle when prompted
  • Clean the shower screen, portafilter and drip tray
  • Replace the water filter approximately every three months
  • Descale according to the machine prompt, water hardness and use
  • Brush out the grinder periodically
