Why is my steam pressure low?

Weak steam is most often caused by a dirty or partially blocked steam tip, the machine not being fully ready to steam, or a model-specific milk-system issue. Limescale is worth considering only when broader water-system performance has also declined.

Cleaning a blocked steam wand

Cause 1

Milk residue or a blocked steam-tip hole

Even a partially blocked steam-tip hole can reduce frothing performance.

  • Steam exits unevenly or sideways
  • The tip has dried milk on it
  • The wand whistles or one jet is weaker
Try this: let the machine cool as required, wipe and purge the wand, and use the supplied cleaning tool on blocked holes. Remove or soak the tip only if your manufacturer specifies it.

Cause 2

The machine is not fully ready to steam

Steam behaviour differs between thermoblock, thermocoil, single-boiler and dual-boiler machines.

  • The first attempt is weak but later attempts improve
  • You have only just selected steam mode
  • Water comes first, followed by stronger steam
Try this: follow the steam-ready indication and purge sequence for your exact machine rather than applying a generic fixed warm-up time.

The milk system needs model-specific cleaning or assembly

Automatic steam wands and milk carafes can use sensors, air inlets, removable nozzles and O-rings that do not behave like a manual wand.

Scale may be affecting the water system

Scale is a stronger diagnosis when weak steam appears alongside reduced hot-water flow, changing coffee temperature or an overdue descale prompt.

  • The machine is genuinely due for descaling

If the wand is clean, the machine is correctly in steam mode and any genuinely due maintenance is complete, persistent loss of steam can point to an internal valve, sensor or heater issue.

Why is my steam wand producing weak steam?
