Even a partially blocked steam-tip hole can reduce frothing performance.

Coffee machine troubleshooting
Weak steam is most often caused by a dirty or partially blocked steam tip, the machine not being fully ready to steam, or a model-specific milk-system issue. Limescale is worth considering only when broader water-system performance has also declined.

Common causes

Cause 1
Even a partially blocked steam-tip hole can reduce frothing performance.

Cause 2
Steam behaviour differs between thermoblock, thermocoil, single-boiler and dual-boiler machines.

Cause 3
Automatic steam wands and milk carafes can use sensors, air inlets, removable nozzles and O-rings that do not behave like a manual wand.

Cause 4
Scale is a stronger diagnosis when weak steam appears alongside reduced hot-water flow, changing coffee temperature or an overdue descale prompt.

Cause 5
If the wand is clean, the machine is correctly in steam mode and any genuinely due maintenance is complete, persistent loss of steam can point to an internal valve, sensor or heater issue.
Pressure or technique?
Steam itself is visibly weak, takes much longer to heat the same milk volume, jets are uneven, or hot-water performance has declined too.
Steam power seems normal but texture is bubbly or flat. Jug position, milk amount, milk type and aeration may be the bigger factor.

Only if scale matches the symptoms
If steam, hot-water delivery or temperature performance have all declined and the machine is due for descaling, mineral build-up is worth ruling out.

Remove milk before it dries.
Follow the machine’s purge routine after milk use.
Use the supplied cleaning tool and model instructions.
Use prompts, water hardness and manufacturer guidance.

Start with the steam tip. Milk residue or partially blocked holes are common causes. Then check that the machine is fully ready to steam and that the milk system is assembled correctly.
A small amount of condensation can be normal. Purge the wand according to the machine instructions and wait for the correct steam-ready indication.
It can be part of the diagnosis when hot-water flow, temperature or other water-system performance has also declined. Weak steam by itself is not enough evidence.
Wipe and purge it after milk use according to the manufacturer instructions. Deeper tip cleaning should be done when required or when holes become restricted.
If steam output is normal, look at milk temperature, milk type, jug position, quantity and technique.
If the tip is clean, the machine is correctly in steam mode, due maintenance is complete and steam remains abnormally weak, use the manufacturer’s service route.
