Barista Express Impress maintenance, made easier to follow.
The page follows the same structure as the Barista Express guide, but the maintenance light, descaling controls and Impress grinder/tamp system are handled separately.

The Express Impress shares some maintenance tasks with the Barista Express, but the control sequence is not identical.
Maintenance schedule
The useful baseline.
On the Express Impress, the maintenance indicator flashes for a cleaning cycle and illuminates solid when descaling is required.
Group head & basket
Flush the group head and rinse the basket and portafilter.
Cleaning cycle
Run the backflush cleaning cycle with the supplied disc and a cleaning tablet.
Grinder & tamp area
Dry-brush loose grounds from the burrs, chute and Impress tamp system.
Water filter
Replace the fitted water filter; change sooner in harder water if needed.
Descaling
Run the full descale sequence for coffee, steam and hot-water circuits.

Coffee-oil cleaning
Run the Express Impress cleaning cycle.
The cleaning cycle is a backflush routine and is separate from descaling.

Fit the cleaning disc and tablet
Insert the 1 CUP basket, the cleaning disc and one cleaning tablet into the portafilter.

Lock in the portafilter
Lock the portafilter into the group head and place a container beneath the spouts.

Prepare the machine
Fill the water tank with cold water, empty the drip tray and switch the machine off.

Start the cleaning cycle
Hold 1 CUP, 2 CUP and POWER together for 3 seconds.

Let the cycle finish
Allow the approximately five-minute cleaning cycle to complete.

Check and rinse
Check the tablet has dissolved, remove the cleaning disc and press 2 CUP to rinse the brew head.
Mineral scale care
Descale the Express Impress.
When the maintenance light stays solid, use the dedicated descale sequence for the coffee, steam and hot-water circuits.

Remove the water filter
Take the filter out before adding descaling solution to the tank.

Prepare the solution
Prepare descaler according to its dosing instructions and add it to the tank.

Place a collection jug
Position a large jug beneath the coffee, steam and hot-water outlets.

Enter descale mode
With the machine off, hold 2 CUP and POWER together for 5 seconds.

Wait until ready
Let the machine heat until the descale indicators are illuminated steadily.

Descale the coffee circuit
Press 2 CUP to run the coffee-circuit descale phase.

Run steam and hot water
Use the steam/hot-water dial to run the descale solution through both remaining circuits.

Repeat until the tank is empty
Repeat the coffee, steam and hot-water phases to use the remaining solution.

Rinse with fresh water
Rinse the tank, refill with fresh water and repeat the rinse sequence to clear descaler residue.
Remove the water filter before descaling. The Express Impress enters descale mode by holding 2 CUP and POWER for 5 seconds.
Water filtration
Replace the Express Impress water filter.
Sage recommends replacing the fitted filter around every three months, with more frequent replacement in harder water where appropriate.
Soak the new filter
Soak the replacement filter for about five minutes, then rinse it briefly under cold water.
Fit it to the holder
Insert the filter into the holder and make sure it is connected securely.
Set the date dial
Set the holder reminder for approximately three months ahead.
Install in the tank
Push the filter holder down into position and reinstall the filled water tank.
After milk use
Keep the steam wand clear.
Wipe and purge after every milk drink, then use the cleaning pin or remove the tip only when needed.

Wipe after texturing
Wipe the steam wand with a damp cloth after every milk use.

Purge the wand
Briefly run steam over the drip tray to clear remaining milk from inside the wand.

Clear blocked holes
When cool, use the supplied cleaning pin if any steam-tip holes are blocked.

Remove the tip if needed
If the blockage remains, remove the tip, soak it in hot water, clear it and refit it.
Impress grinder & tamp system
Keep dry coffee residue out of the grinder and tamp area.
Routine dry brushing is enough for normal care; deeper disassembly is only for an actual blockage.

Empty the hopper
Remove beans and run the grinder until loose coffee has cleared.

Remove the upper burr
Unlock and lift out the removable top burr.

Brush the burrs and chute
Dry-brush coffee residue from the upper burr, lower burr and grinder chute.
04
Clean the Impress tamp area
Remove the tamp cover and brush loose grounds from the tamp face and cradle before refitting it.
