Descaling
Removes mineral scale from the heated water system. Water hardness is the main reason one household may need to descale more often than another.

Removes mineral scale from the heated water system. Water hardness is the main reason one household may need to descale more often than another.
Removes coffee oils and residue. The correct routine may be a cleaning cycle, tablet clean, removable brew-group clean or backflush depending on the machine.
Replace compatible filters at the interval specified for that filter system. They can reduce scale formation but do not all alter descaling in the same way.
Steam wands, automatic milk carafes and milk tubes need prompt cleaning because milk residue behaves differently from coffee residue or limescale.
Removable brew groups, baskets and shower screens should be kept clear according to the machine design. Do not apply one routine to every machine type.
Keep hoppers and accessible grinder areas clean according to the manufacturer. Grinder care is separate from descaling and water-system maintenance.
Ventori baseline
Ventori gives you clear timing where a general rule is useful, while model-specific cleaning cycles and filter systems remain tied to the exact machine.
Ventori baseline: soft 8 weeks, moderate 6 weeks, hard 4–6 weeks, very hard 4 weeks. Follow an earlier machine prompt.
Wipe and purge a steam wand, or run the machine’s milk-system rinse/clean routine where applicable.
Backflushing is not universal. Use the cleaning method supported by your espresso, bean-to-cup or pod machine.
Follow the replacement interval for the exact filter system fitted to your machine.

Mineral scale
For coffee-machine descale procedures where a suitable descaler is required.
Coffee oils
For compatible espresso-machine cleaning cycles and detergent backflush procedures only.
Something changed?
Shot speed, flavour, steam pressure, CLEAN ME lights, leaks and unusual noise often need different diagnoses.
Automatic rinse systems, removable brew groups, milk systems and pod-machine flow problems need machine-type-specific troubleshooting.
FAQs
There is no single routine that applies to every machine. Most machines need regular cleaning and periodic descaling, while water filters, backflushing, removable brew-group care and milk-system cleaning depend on the machine design.
Ventori’s baseline is every 4–8 weeks depending on water hardness: around 8 weeks in soft water, 6 weeks in moderate water, 4–6 weeks in hard water and 4 weeks in very hard water. Follow an earlier machine descale prompt or a manufacturer-approved filter system that explicitly changes the interval.
No. Backflushing is only appropriate for machines designed to support it. Some espresso machines use a detergent cleaning cycle, some support clear-water backflushing, and others should not be backflushed at all.
Not universally. Some filter systems significantly extend descaling intervals when installed and replaced correctly, while others mainly reduce scale exposure. Follow the guidance for the exact filter system and machine.
Cleaning removes coffee oils, milk residue and other organic deposits. Descaling removes mineral deposits from the water system. They are separate maintenance jobs.
Harder water generally increases scale exposure. That is why Ventori uses water hardness as the main input for its descaling interval.
Yes, when maintenance addresses the actual problem. Clean brew paths, milk systems and filters can support consistent machine performance, while descaling helps manage mineral deposits. Recipe variables still matter for espresso flavour and extraction.
