Bean-to-cup troubleshooting

Find the cause before replacing the machine.

Weak coffee, slow flow, low steam performance and unusual noise can sometimes be traced back to cleaning, scale, filters or routine maintenance. Start with the symptom, then work through the likely causes.

Bean-to-cup coffee machine troubleshooting
Start with the symptom

Choose the problem that best matches what your machine is doing.

Check the maintenance cause

Scale, brew-group residue, filters and milk-system build-up are common areas to rule out.

Then use the model guide

Follow your manufacturer's exact cleaning and maintenance procedure before changing parts.

Where problems often start

Check the maintenance system behind the symptom.

Bean-to-cup machines combine several systems. The same symptom can come from water quality, the brewing system or the milk circuit.

Water system

Scale, filters and water flow

  • Reduced water flow
  • Temperature instability
  • Longer heat-up or dispensing
  • Descale or filter warnings

Check water hardness, filter condition and whether the machine is due for its manufacturer-approved descaling cycle.

Brew system

Brew group and coffee residue

  • Weak or inconsistent coffee
  • Restricted brew flow
  • Residue around the brew group
  • Cleaning-program warnings

Bean-to-cup machines generally use their own brew-group cleaning routine or cleaning programme. They should not be treated like a traditional backflush espresso machine.

Milk system

Milk residue and blockages

  • Poor froth
  • Reduced milk flow
  • Spluttering or inconsistent delivery
  • Milk-system cleaning warnings

Clean the milk circuit, removable parts and connectors using the procedure specified for your machine.

When scale may be involved

When did you last descale?

Limescale can contribute to reduced water flow, temperature instability and slower dispensing, particularly in harder-water areas. If your machine is due for descaling, completing its proper descale cycle is a sensible maintenance check before assuming there is a fault.

Descaling will not fix every troubleshooting problem. Use it when scale is a plausible cause or when your machine's maintenance schedule says it is due.

Quick maintenance checks

Rule out the simple things first.

Descale when due

Remove mineral build-up using your machine's own descaling programme and the correct dilution or tablet dose.

Clean the brew group

Rinse and clean removable brew-group parts where your manufacturer allows it, and run the machine's cleaning programme when prompted.

Check the water filter

An overdue or incorrectly primed filter can contribute to flow and water-quality problems on compatible machines.

Find your machine

Use the exact maintenance instructions for your model.

Cleaning cycles, filter procedures and brew-group maintenance vary between manufacturers and models.
