Nespresso UK currently recommends descaling every 3–4 months or after about 300 capsules, whichever comes first, unless the machine gives an earlier alert. Cleaning and milk care happen much more frequently.
Capsule area
Eject used capsules and keep accessible coffee residue from building up around the outlet and capsule area.
Water, tray & container
Refresh tank water, empty the drip tray and capsule container and wipe accessible surfaces.
General clean

Descaling

Routine cleaning

No backflushing
Nespresso Original and Vertuo machines do not use a traditional espresso-machine backflush routine. Do not use a blind basket or backflush tablet.
Eject used capsules promptly
Do not leave a spent capsule sitting in the brewing area for long periods.
Wash removable parts
Clean the drip tray, capsule container and water tank regularly using the method allowed for this model.
Wipe accessible coffee residue
Use a soft damp cloth around the outlet and accessible capsule-contact area. Do not push tools into the brewing mechanism.

Enter the correct Vertuo Pop descaling mode.
The control sequence is where Nespresso models differ most. Prepare the machine and descaling solution first, then follow the exact programme and complete every fresh-water rinse stage.
Eject any capsule, close the head and leave the lever unlocked.
Hold the button for about 7 seconds until it blinks orange rapidly.
Within 45 seconds, lock then unlock the lever and hold the button again for about 7 seconds.
Lock the lever and press the button once to start descaling.

The head will not close or open normally
Remove the capsule if safe to do so, check for visible obstruction and do not force the mechanism. Use the exact model assistance route.
A warning light or unusual blink pattern appears
Vertuo light patterns are model-specific. Match the light state to this model before starting a cleaning or descale programme.
Capsule recognition or ejection changes
Keep the capsule-contact and barcode-reading area clean and stop if the head or capsule mechanism is not moving normally.

For Nespresso, descaler is the main chemical maintenance product.
