Gaggia Classic 2019

Classic 2019 maintenance, organised around the jobs that matter.

The 2019 New Classic remains one of the most widely owned Gaggia home espresso machines. Its maintenance centres on detergent backflushing, group and basket degreasing, steam-wand cleaning and regular descaling.

Maintenance schedule

The useful baseline for your Classic 2019.

Use the machine’s own prompt sooner whenever it asks for maintenance. Water hardness and usage can also change the practical timing.

After use

Group & steam hygiene

Flush the group, rinse the basket and purge/wipe the steam wand.

Regularly

Water-only backflush

Use a blind basket only where the model supports backflushing.

As coffee oils build / model guidance

Detergent backflush

Use espresso cleaner through the supported backflush routine, followed by a thorough water-only rinse.

Regularly

Group deep clean

Brush the gasket/shower area and degrease suitable removable metal coffee-contact parts.

Water-dependent

Scale management

Use the model-specific descale method and adjust practical timing to local water hardness.

Personalise this schedule

Want Ventori to remember the Gaggia Classic 2019 maintenance rhythm for you?

Your machine is already selected. Add local water hardness and typical use without choosing the manufacturer or model again.

After every session

Keep coffee and milk residue from becoming tomorrow’s problem.

A few seconds of flushing and wiping after use reduces how often the machine needs aggressive cleaning later.

01

Flush the group after brewing

Run a short water flush after removing the portafilter so loose coffee particles do not bake onto the shower screen and group seal.

02

Rinse the basket and portafilter

Knock out the puck, rinse away grounds and wipe the basket dry rather than leaving coffee residue sitting in the metalwork.

03

Purge and wipe the steam wand immediately

Purge condensate before steaming, then wipe and purge again straight after milk use while residue is still easy to remove.

04

Empty the drip tray and refresh water

Keep standing water, spent coffee and stale reservoir water out of the daily workflow.

Coffee-oil cleaning

Backflush the group through the machine’s three-way valve.

Backflushing is for coffee oils and residue behind the group head. It is not descaling and the cleaner does not belong in the water tank.

01

Confirm the machine supports blind-basket backflushing

Use the exact machine manual or supplied blind basket/backflush disc as the compatibility check before starting.

02

Fit the blind basket or backflush disc

Install it in the portafilter and add the correct amount of espresso-machine cleaning product for a detergent cycle.

03

Run short pressure cycles

Engage the brew pump briefly, stop, allow pressure to release through the three-way valve, then repeat as specified for the machine.

04

Remove and rinse the portafilter

Rinse away cleaner before completing the water-only stage.

05

Repeat with clean water only

Backflush again without detergent until the discharged water is clear and no cleaning residue remains.

06

Flush the group before brewing

Run fresh water through the group and discard the first rinse before returning to normal coffee preparation.

Gaggia UK specifically publishes backflushing guidance for the Classic family; use a detergent made for espresso-machine backflushing and finish with clean-water cycles.

Periodic deep clean

Clean the parts the backflush cannot reach by itself.

A detergent cycle does not physically remove every trapped coffee particle around the gasket, shower screen, baskets and portafilter.

01

Brush the group seal and shower area

Use a group-head brush to remove grounds from the gasket and accessible shower-screen area.

02

Soak suitable removable metal coffee parts

Baskets and removable metal portafilter components can be degreased with an espresso cleaner when their material and finish permit it.

03

Keep cleaner away from handles and sensitive finishes

Do not immerse wooden handles, painted parts, gauges, electronics or other non-coffee-contact components.

04

Inspect the group gasket and shower screen

Persistent leaks around the portafilter or uneven flow can indicate wear or a blocked screen rather than a need for repeated detergent cycles.

Milk hygiene

Purge, wipe, purge.

Milk residue becomes far harder to remove once it dries inside or around the steam tip.

01

Purge before milk

Release condensation before placing the wand in milk.

02

Wipe immediately after steaming

Use a clean damp cloth while the milk film is still soft.

03

Purge again

A short purge helps clear milk from the steam tip holes.

04

Remove and soak the tip only when needed

If holes remain restricted, remove the tip according to the machine instructions and clean it separately rather than probing aggressively.

Descaling

Descale the water path separately from backflushing.

The exact descale sequence depends on machine generation and boiler design. Use local water hardness to judge how aggressively the published interval needs to be managed.

Understand this care task →
01

Check your exact model procedure

Boiler materials and control layouts vary, especially across long-running model families.

02

Remove the portafilter

Descaling treats the water path, not the coffee-oil side of the portafilter and group.

03

Prepare the correct descaling solution

Use the dose and water volume specified for the model and never substitute backflush cleaner.

04

Move solution through the required water paths

Follow the published sequence through the brew group and/or steam or hot-water path as instructed.

05

Rinse thoroughly with fresh water

Complete every rinse stage before brewing or steaming again.

MODEL-SPECIFIC CHECK

Use the exact procedure for your machine.

Prosumer espresso machines can differ by generation, boiler material, pump and water-feed configuration. Check the exact model and serial generation before any invasive maintenance.

Relevant Ventori care

Match the maintenance product to the job.

Backflush cleaner removes coffee oils from the group system; descaler removes mineral scale from the water path. They are separate products for separate jobs.
